<h2>Dr Phillip Monaghan</h2>

<div><img src="https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/comark-user-uploads/60bf48831e538d1b78c7affb.jpg" alt="Image" /><br /><br />Dr Phillip Monaghan graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1981. Following intern and residency terms at St Vincent&rsquo;s and Sydney Hospital he completed basic Physician&rsquo;s training at St George Hospital. He subsequently undertook advanced training in Nuclear Medicine at St George and Prince of Wales Hospitals, completing training in 1990.&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>Dr Monaghan is Positron Emission Tomography (PET) certified following training at St Thomas&rsquo; Hospital, London and Westmead Hospital in Sydney. Dr Monaghan holds fellowships in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, the Australasian Association of Nuclear Medicine Specialists and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. He is a member of the Australian Medical Association, the Australia and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine, the American Society of Nuclear Medicine, the British Society of Nuclear Medicine and the European Association of Nuclear Medicine.&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>He currently spends an equal amount of time in all practice sites and has particular interest in musculoskeletal and thyroid scintigraphy.</div>

<h2>Associate Professor George Larcos</h2>
<div><em>FRACP, DDU, MPH, FAANMS</em></div>
<div><img src="https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/comark-user-uploads/60bf48831e538d1b78c7affc.jpg" alt="Image" /><br /><br />George has previously served as head, Department of Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound, Westmead Hospital and President, Australasian Association of Nuclear Medicine Specialists. As well as a willingness to represent nuclear medicine in discussions with government, industry and advocacy groups, George has an interest in teaching &amp; research. <br /><br />He has an appointment at Sydney Medical School as a Clinical Associate Professor and previously acted as the Editor for the Australasian Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine. He is currently undertaking a PhD with the focus on improving the conduct and safety of nuclear medicine procedures. Having widely published, George brings to the Southern Nuclear Imaging group a wealth of experience in many aspects of nuclear medicine. <br /><br />In his spare time he enjoys travelling, reading and football. He thinks that Revelation 5:5 is such a great verse that he's even got a T-shirt to prove it.</div>

You further agree to indemnify and hold us, our affiliates, subsidiaries, parents, shareholders, directors, officers, employees, agents and representatives (Southern Nuclear Imaging indemnified parties) harmless from any claim or demand, including reasonable legal fees, made by any third party due to or arising out of the violation of these terms by you, or the infringement by you, or other user of this using your user name and password, of any intellectual property or other right of any person or entity.</p>

<div><strong>What is a Bone Scan?</strong> <br />(also known as Wholebody Bone Scan and Localised Bone Scan)<br />A bone scan is a nuclear imaging test that helps diagnose and track several types of bone disease. Your doctor may order a bone scan if you have unexplained skeletal pain, a bone infection or a bone injury that cannot be seen on a standard X-ray. It safely uses a very small amount of a radioactive drug called a radiopharmaceutical; this drug will not impair you in any way.</div>
<div>This scan is different to a DEXA/BMD- Bone Mineral Density.<br /><br /></div>
<div><strong>How long does a Bone scan take?</strong></div>
<div>Please allow between 4 - 5 hours to complete your scan. Due to the length this scan takes appointments are only made in the morning.</div>
<div><br /><strong>What preparation is there for a Bone Scan?</strong></div>
<div>No preparation is required for this scan. Please bring your referral from the doctor, any relevant recent scans/tests, and your Medicare card.</div>
<div><br /><strong>What does a bone scan involve?</strong></div>
<div>A bone scan is conducted in 2 parts:</div>
<div>First part takes 30 minutes and involves a small injection in a vein in your arm and some scan pictures are taken immediately.</div>
<div>You will then be given a time to return to the practice, usually 2 &ndash; 3 hours after the injection.</div>
<div>When you return for the second part, your scan will take 1 hour. You will not be under the scanner for an entire hour, a series of different pictures are taken.&nbsp;</div>
<div><br /><strong>When are the results available?</strong></div>
<div>After your scan is completed a Nuclear Medicine Physician will review your scan and write a report of the results. This report and the scan images will be sent securely electronically to your referring doctor/specialist. If you require your results to be sent to a different doctor please advise the staff on the day of your scan.</div>
<div><br /><strong>Are there any costs for this scan?</strong></div>
<div>No, your scan will be Bulk Billed. This means there is NO out of pocket cost for you if you qualify for Medicare.<br /><br /><br /></div>

<div>Please allow approximately 4 - 5 hours to complete your scan. You will be in our practice the whole time. Due to the length this scan takes appointments are only made in the morning.</div>
<div><br /><strong>What preparation is there for a Myocardial Perfusion Scan?</strong></div>
<div>You may be asked to cease certain medications prior to the test &ndash; please contact the practice for more information; an instruction sheet can be emailed to you.</div>
<div>Caffeine needs to be ceased 24 hours prior to your appointment (this includes but not limited to chocolate, tea, coffee, cola soft drink etc).</div>
<div>Have a light breakfast eg: toast and juice.</div>
<div>Wear a separate top to bottoms, with a shirt that can be opened at the front.</div>
<div>Please bring your referral from the doctor, any relevant recent scans/tests, and your Medicare card.</div>
<div><br /><strong>What does a Myocardial Perfusion Scan involve?</strong></div>
<div>Part 1: REST: You will be given a small injection of a radioactive tracer that is taken up by the heart muscle. This injection will not make you feel any different. Following a short wait (20-60 minutes), images will be acquired of your heart. This part of the test takes about 1 hour.</div>
<div>There will then be a short wait (1-2 hours) before part 2. This wait is to allow for the first injection to decay and excrete your body, during this wait you will be required to stay in the practice.</div>
<div>Part 2: STRESS: This involves exercise on a bike. If you are unable to exercise an injection of medication is used to artificially stress the heart. An ECG is performed, and your blood pressure is noted. Once your heart is at peak stress, another injection of radioactive tracer is administered. Following this stress test, you will be offered a tea or coffee and some refreshments. After 20-60 minutes, more images will be acquired of your heart. This part of the test can take between 1 &ndash; 2 hours.</div>
<div><br /><strong>When are the results available?</strong></div>
<div>After your scan is completed a Nuclear Medicine Physician will review your scan and write a report of the results. This report and the scan images will be sent securely electronically to your referring doctor/specialist. If you require your results to be sent to a different doctor please advise the staff on the day of your scan.</div>

Myocardial Perfusion Scan

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What is a Lung (V/Q) Scan?</strong><br />(also known as: Lung Ventilation and Perfusion Scan)<br />A Lung (V/Q) scan, also called a Ventilation (V) Perfusion (Q) scan, is made up of two scans that examine air flow and blood flow in your lungs. The first scan measures how well air flows through your lungs. The second scan looks at where the blood flows in your lungs.<br /><br />If the lungs are working properly, the air flow seen on the ventilation scan will match the blood flow seen on the perfusion scan. A mismatch between the ventilation and perfusion scans (V better than Q) could indicate a blockage or PE.<br /><br /><img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/comark-user-uploads/60ab24daed950f29a1ea1722.jpg" alt="Image" width="320" height="242" /></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What preparation is there for a Lung (V/Q) Scan?</strong><br />You don&rsquo;t need to do anything special to prepare for a VQ scan, though it is advised that you should have had a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://www.svhlunghealth.com.au/procedures/imaging/chest-x-ray/chest-x-ray"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">chest x ray</span></a> done.<br />Please bring your referral from the doctor, any relevant recent scans/tests, and your Medicare card.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What does a Lung (V/Q) Scan involve?</strong><br />VQ scans involve two separate scans.<br /><br />In the first scan:</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">You will be asked to breathe in a small amount of low-risk radioactive gas through a tube, for around five minutes the gas won&rsquo;t make you feel any different<br />You will lie on a table and must be careful not to move around<br />The table will move under a scanner, and you must lie very still<br />The scanner will take photos of your chest and the airflow in your lungs</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In the second scan:</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Your doctor will inject a low-risk radioactive dye into your arm. The dye will travel through your blood and into your lungs, it won&rsquo;t make you feel any different<br />The table will move under a scanner, and you must lie very still<br />The scanner will take images of the blood flow in your lungs</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Each scan takes around 15 minutes.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>When are the results available?</strong><br />After your scan is completed a Nuclear Medicine Physician will review your scan and write a report of the results. Lung (V/Q) Scan

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What is a Thyroid Scan?</strong><br />A Thyroid scan&nbsp;will&nbsp;show&nbsp;the outline, shape, and position of your&nbsp;thyroid&nbsp;so that the doctor&nbsp;can&nbsp;determine whether it is enlarged and whether there are any suspicious growths or nodules. The&nbsp;scan&nbsp;also provides a measure of&nbsp;thyroid&nbsp;function.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>How long does a Thyroid Scan take?</strong><br />Please allow approximately 1 hour for this scan to be completed.</p>

<p><strong>What does a Renal DTPA Scan involve?</strong><br />The basic procedure for performing a DTPA Renal Scan may vary slightly depending on the specific information that we require about your kidneys prior to your scan.&nbsp;For example, a blood pressure tablet or an injection called Lasix may need to be given either prior to or at some stage during the examination.</p>
<p>You will be administered with a small injection of a radioactive tracer. This injection will not make you feel any different. This injection allows the Kidneys and Bladder to be seen by the camera. The scan is started immediately, and images are taken for 30 minutes whilst lying under the camera.<br />A second injection of Lasix may be given to promote the Kidneys to empty.&nbsp;<br />At the end of the scan, you may be asked to go to the toilet and empty your bladder, then return for a further 5 minutes of imaging.&nbsp;</p>

<div>This examination uses a small amount of radioactive tracer to follow the natural lymphatic flow of your legs or arms. You will receive one or two small injections into each foot at the beginning of the procedure. The injection will sting for a brief period; however, the rest of the procedure is painless and these injections will not make you feel any different. Once the injection has been administered you will be asked to walk around for 15 minutes to encourage lymphatic flow. You will then be positioned beneath the gamma camera which will take an image of you from your feet to your pelvis. This imaging will take approximately 30 minutes. You will then be asked to walk around for a further 15 minutes and then further imaging will be taken. This procedure will be repeated several times, until the tracer makes its way to your liver, which can take between one and two hours. In some cases, the radiologist may ask to take pictures 2-3 hours after the administered injection to see how the tracer travels through your body.</div>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What is a Gastric Emptying Study?</strong><br />This examination is used to investigate the function of your stomach. It will assess how fast/slow food passes through your stomach. Although time consuming, it is simple and non-invasive.&nbsp;<br />You may have been referred for this procedure if you have or are suspected to have:&nbsp;<br />Gastroparesis - a disease where the stomach muscles are weakened, resulting in insufficient grinding and poor emptying of food from the stomach.&nbsp;<br />Dumping Syndrome - also known as rapid gastric emptying, food moves too quickly from the stomach to small bowel.<br />Or unexplained nausea and vomiting.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>How long does a Gastric Emptying Study take?</strong><br />Please allow up to 4 hours for this study to be completed. This study is booked first thing in the morning, this is due to the way your stomach functions.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What preparation is there for a Gastric Emptying Study?</strong><br />You need to fast from Midnight the night before the test (8-hours fasting), and eat nothing until you come in for your appointment. <p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What does a Gastric Emptying Study involve?</strong><br />On arrival you will be asked to eat a small meal, consisting of two scrambled eggs. You will be asked to eat this within 5 minutes. A small amount of radioactive agent is added to the egg which allows us to track the movement of food through the stomach (there are no side effects from this radioactivity).&nbsp;<br />Once you have finished the meal imaging will commence immediately. You will be assisted laying down on the scanning camera bed and the camera will move in very close over your abdomen - it will not touch you and there are no sounds from the machine. <br />You will then be imaged every hour for four hours - please feel free to bring a book or activity to use between the images.<br />Although you are allowed to leave the department, you cannot eat or drink until the study is over. Most people choose to stay in the waiting room.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What is a Colon Transit Study?</strong><br />This examination is used to investigate your bowel movements. It can help separate simple constipation from more severe constipation and obstructed defaecation. The procedure takes one week (Monday to Friday). <p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What is a Hepatobiliary Scan</strong><br />(alspo known as a HIDA Scan or Gallbladder Scan)<br />A Hepatobiliary Scan is performed to assess the ability of the gallbladder to fill and empty as well as the function of the biliary tree.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>How long does a Hepatobiliary Scan take?</strong><br />Please allow 2 hours for this test to be completed. Appointments are made in the early afternoon due to the preparation required, as outline below.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What preparation is there for a Hepatobiliary Scan?</strong><br />Inform the practice if you have had your Gallbladder removed<br />You need to fast for 4 hours prior to this test. You are advised to eat breakfast on the morning of the test, before 8:00AM, then only have a small amount of clear fluids until you attend the practice for your appointment. It is important to eat breakfast, because a long period (6+ hours) of fasting can affect the results.<br />Opiate medication (e.g. Endone) must be ceased more than 8 hours prior to the test.<br />Please bring your referral from the doctor, any relevant recent scans/tests, and your Medicare card</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What does a Hepatobiliary Scan involve?</strong><br /><u>For patients with a Gallbladder</u><br />This test works in two parts:</p>

<li class="MsoNormal">Part one - a&nbsp;small injection of a radioactive tracer is administered into a vein in the arm. This injection will not make you feel any different. This injection travels through the body and fills up your gallbladder. <br />After the injection you are asked to wait in the waiting room for 45 minutes. After that time you will be place under a scanning camera and images are obtained for 5 minutes. <br />If a sufficient amount of the tracer is visible in your gallbladder you move on to part two; if the gallbladder isn&rsquo;t visible you will be asked to wait a further 20 minutes and imaging will be repeated. If a sufficient amount of the tracer is visible in your gallbladder you move on to part two; if the gallbladder isn&rsquo;t visible this concludes the test.</li>

<li class="MsoNormal">Part two - the second part involves drinking a dietary supplement (Vanilla or Chocolate flavour). Once you have finished the drink, you will be asked to wait in the waiting room for 45 minutes. After that time images are then taken to show how the gallbladder empties.</li>

Images are taken continuously for approximately 90 minutes. During the images, after 45 minutes you will be asked to drink a dietary supplement (Vanilla or Chocolate flavour) and the images continue to 90 minutes.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What is a Gallium White Cell Count (WCC) Scan?</strong><br />(also known as an Infection Scan or commonly referred to as a Gallium Scan)<br />A gallium scan is used to detect inflammation in tissue. This can be an indication for infection or tumours. It is often used to assess the presence of bone or soft tissue infection. This test can also be used to assess and monitor patients with Lymphoma.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>How long does a Gallium Scan take?</strong><br />A Gallium scan requires two appointments, usually 48 hours apart. An initial injection taking 15 minutes completes the first appointment, then 48 hours later the images are taken. This component can take up to 60 minutes to complete.</p>

<div><strong>What is a Cerebral Perfusion (Ceretec) Scan?</strong></div>
<div>A Cerebral Perfusion or Ceretec scan looks at brain function by demonstrating the amount of blood taken up by the brain cells. This scan is designed to show if some parts of the brain are working more than normal or less than normal. Conditions such as dementia, epilepsy and stroke can be diagnosed according to the distribution of the tracer within the brain.</div>

<div>The scan will take about 1 and a half hours to complete.</div>

<div><strong>What does a Cerebral Perfusion Scan involve?</strong></div>
<div>Cerebral perfusion studies are always performed early in the morning to ensure the practice is quiet. Upon arrival you will be taken into a room where an IV cannula (a thin plastic tube) will be inserted into a vein in your arm. The scan requires you to rest for 20-30 minutes in a quiet, darkened room before the radiopharmaceutical can be given. You will most likely be alone during this time so that your brain is not stimulated by any interaction you may have with another person. <br /><br />To ensure you stay rested, the technologist may advise you that when they enter the room to inject the radiopharmaceutical you do not acknowledge them but just pretend they are not there. Once the radiopharmaceutical is injected, you will need to rest for a further 10-30 minutes before the scanning begins. This injection will not make you feel any different.</div>

<div>You will be required to lie still for up to 30 minutes and your head will be resting in a head holder. A scanning camera will rotate around your head. It will come quite close to your head but will not touch it. You may close your eyes.</div>

<div>You will be asked to stand in front of a camera, then you will be instructed to swallow a small amount of water with a radioactive tracer mixed in. This tracer will not make you feel any different.&nbsp; Scan images will be taken while you are swallowing the water, they will take 2 minutes. Following these images, you will be asked to lay on the scanning bed and the camera will be placed over your chest. These images will take 30 minutes.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Meckel's Diverticulum is a small abnormality in the small intestine. This abnormality sometimes contains gastric mucosa from the stomach, which can cause local ulcers and bleeding. A Meckel's scan is a diagnostic imaging procedure that detects the abnormally located gastric mucosa.</div>

<div><strong>What is I-131 Capsule Therapy?</strong><br />(also known as Radioiodine therapy)</div>
<div>Radioiodine therapy is a nuclear medicine treatment for an overactive thyroid, a condition called hyperthyroidism, and also may be used to treat thyroid cancer. When a small dose of radioactive iodine I-131 (an isotope of iodine that emits radiation) is swallowed, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and concentrated by the thyroid gland, where it begins destroying the gland's cells.&nbsp;</div>
<div><br /><strong>How long does a I-131 Capsule Therapy take?</strong></div>
<div>You will be booked in for an initial consult visit with one of our Nuclear Medicine physicians who will discuss the therapy with you. This initial visit will take approximately 30 minutes.<br /><br /></div>
<div>After the consult you will make an appointment with us for the delivery of the I-131 capsule. This appointment will take approximately 15 minutes.</div>
<div><br /><strong>What preparation is there for a I-131 Capsule Therapy?</strong></div>
<div>If you have been taking anti-thyroid medications, you must stop at least three days before the therapy is given. Frequently, the anti-thyroid medication is stopped for five to seven days before therapy.</div>
<div><br />You will be able to return home following radioactive iodine treatment, but you should avoid prolonged, close contact with other people for several days, particularly pregnant women and small children. The majority of the radioactive iodine that has not been absorbed leaves the body during the first two days following the treatment, primarily through the urine. Small amounts will also be excreted in saliva, sweat, tears, vaginal secretions, and feces.<br /><br /></div>
<div>If your work or daily activities involve prolonged contact with small children or pregnant women, you will want to wait several days after your treatment to resume these activities. Patients with infants at home should arrange for care to be provided by another person for the first several days after treatment. The Nuclear Medicine physician will be more specific during the initial consult for your given situation, but usually this time period is only two to five days.</div>
<div><br />
<p style="line-height: 116px;">The Nuclear Medicine physician will give you a list of other precautions to take following your treatment with I-131. The following are some guidelines to comply with:</p>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Use private toilet facilities, if possible, and flush twice after each use.</li>
<li>Bathe daily and wash hands frequently.</li>
<li>Drink a normal amount of fluids.</li>
<li>Use disposable eating utensils or wash your utensils separately from others.</li>
<li>Sleep alone and avoid prolonged intimate contact for three or four days. Brief periods of close contact, such as handshaking and hugging, are permitted.</li>
<li>Launder your linens, towels, and clothes daily at home, separately. No special cleaning of the washing machine is required between loads.</li>
<li>Do not prepare food for others that requires prolonged handling with bare hands.</li>
<li>If you are breast-feeding, you must stop several days before to ensure that milk production has also stopped.</li>
<li>You should avoid becoming pregnant from six months to one year after treatment.</li>
<li>You must be sure you are not pregnant before receiving I-131.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>Patients who need to travel immediately after radioactive iodine treatment are advised to carry a letter of explanation from their physician. Radiation detection devices used at airports and federal buildings may be sensitive to the radiation levels present in patients up to three months following treatment with I-131. Depending on the amount of radioactivity administered during your treatment, your endocrinologist or radiation safety officer may recommend continued precautions for up to several weeks after treatment.</div>
<div><br /><strong>What dose a I-131 Capsule Therapy Involve?</strong></div>
<div>You will be booked in for an initial consult visit with one of our Nuclear Medicine physicians who will discuss the therapy with you. This initial visit will take approximately 30 minutes. During this consult you will discuss with the Nuclear Medicine physician your suitability for I-131 therapy, as well as the precautions that you must adhere to after the administration of the I-131 capsule.</div>
<div>After the consult you will make an appointment with us for the delivery of the I-131 capsule. This appointment will take approximately 15 minutes. You will be taken into a consult room, where you will be asked if you had any follow up questions after your consult visit. Then you will be administered the I-131 capsule. You will be instructed to tip the capsule directly into your mouth from its container and not handle the capsule with your hands. You will be given a glass of water and instructed to swallow the capsule in one go. Following the administration of the capsule you will be able to leave the practice.&nbsp;<br /><br /></div>
<div><strong>When are the results available?</strong></div>
<div>Following the administration of the capsule a Nuclear Medicine Physician will write a report detailing the administration of the therapy capsule to you. This report will be sent securely electronically to your referring doctor/specialist. If you require your results to be sent to a different doctor, please advise the staff on the day of your scan.<br /><br /></div>
